Diatomaceous earth often termed as diatomite is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary rock. It is white, brittle and can be easily crushed into white powder. The normal composition of diatomite is 80-90% of silica, 2-4% alumina and 0.5-2% of iron oxide. They are considered to be remains of a type of hard shelled protists called diatoms.
